The Rensselaer Police Department are responsible for protecting the public, preventing and identifying crime, and upholding law and order. Our officers uphold their duties by patrolling, responding to calls, investigating, issuing citations and making arrests.

CHIEF OF POLICE, Matthew A. Anderson

On December 27, 2017, Chief of Police, Matthew A. Anderson was officially sworn in by Mayor Wood, to begin his service on January 01, 2018. Anderson, an 18-year veteran, began his service with the City of Rensselaer Police Department in November of 1998 as a dispatcher. On June 14, 1999, he was sworn in as a full-time police officer by former Chief of Police, William T. Sammons. In December of 2016, Matthew Anderson was promoted to Lieutenant by former Chief of Police, Jeffrey S. Phillips
