The Meter Department is comprised of Jim Hurd and Heath Malone - Electronic Foremen
The Meter Department provides the service of reading all of the city's electric, gas and water meters every month and works with the Utility Office and other city departments to assure accurate billing. With a customer base of approximately 3,000, the meter readers are actually reading 9,000 meters a month since the City of Rensselaer owns its own Electric, Water, Sewage and Gas Utilities.
Over the years, with technical advances, the Meter Department has downsized from five employees to two. Originally, the employees would walk the routes and hand enter any meter consumption into a book. Modern technology has made it possible to collect meter usage through a handheld radio read device, which electronically sends all of the information from the reader to the City of Rensselaer Utility Office site where the information generates the utility bills.
